Savings continue to grow for Mansfields as they add more green energy to their site

Read the case study

The latest solar PV installation will see Mansfields generate an impressive 2.5MW of green energy to power their operations

FW Mansfields, a leading supplier of fresh produce based in Kent, is firmly rooted in a robust sustainability strategy to deploy a multitude of green energy solutions that is evident in their recent accolades. Having been awarded the Small Cold Store of the Year in 2023 and the Sustainable Cold Storage Operator in 2024 by the Cold Chain Federation, the company demonstrates its continued commitment to environmentally responsible operations. Currently boasting a renewable energy portfolio of 2.5MW, FW Mansfields continues to plan additional solar projects aimed at further increasing their contribution to green energy. Since our appointment in 2021, Harvest Green Developments have proudly supported FW Mansfields with their sustainability strategy by continuing to design, supply, and install additional renewable technology across their site, as well as providing comprehensive maintenance support for their existing solar portfolio.

FW Mansfield specialise in the year-round growth of premium quality fruits such as cherries, strawberries, apples, pears, plums, and apricots, they provide essential storage and packing services to the UK market. The nature of food processing and cold storage is inherently energy intensive, making it crucial for businesses like FW Mansfields to seek viable solutions that alleviate high energy costs. The implementation of solar arrays allows the company to offset these costs, promoting energy independence across their facilities. By integrating green energy technologies into their operations, FW Mansfields is not only enhancing sustainability but also ensuring a more resilient business model, which aligns perfectly with their long-term vision for environmental leadership.

Adding to FW Mansfields’ impressive solar portfolio

The latest solar PV installations at FW Mansfields include a 298.08kW system on a cold store and a 241.92kW array on their fourth packing house, where fresh produce is prepared for transportation. The combined output from these solar arrays is significant, resulting in a reduction of the site’s carbon emissions by an impressive 88,764kg annually and a generation of over 510MWh of clean electricity each year. These new systems will sit along side earlier solar installations to increase the site’s overall solar capacity to 2.5MW. This serious commitment of investing in green energy solutions positions FW Mansfields as a leading sustainable fresh produce supplier.

Choosing the right technology to maximise results

The latest solar installations feature Solis string inverters, which seamlessly integrate with the inverter infrastructure of previous installations, ensuring high performance and reliability. The solar panels are supplied by Trina Solar, known for their Tier 1 quality and efficiency, delivering outstanding energy output. For optimal mounting, Rubicon UK’s mounting kits were selected, which are specifically designed for trapezoidal roofing sheets and provide robust and secure fixing without compromising the integrity of the roof. With stringent energy export restrictions imposed by the local Distribution Network Operator, UK Power Networks, export limitation devices have been incorporated into the design to meet these requirements.

To ensure comprehensive insights into energy production and consumption, FW Mansfields’ solar plant is now fully equipped with advanced metering capabilities provided and supported by Juggle Energy. This technology allows the team to remotely monitor how much electricity is generated, consumed on-site, and exported to the grid. This level of monitoring not only promotes transparency but also enhances operational efficiency, enabling FW Mansfields to make data-driven decision regarding their energy usage. By identifying patterns and optimising their overall energy strategy, they are further solidifying their commitment to sustainable practices in the cold storage and fruit supply industry.

Plans to grow their green energy potential even further

Looking to the future, FW Mansfields has ambitious plans to expand their solar capacity even further. Together, we are exploring designs for at least six more green energy projects, among which an innovative floating solar system for their reservoir stands out. This unique approach aims to maximise space while increasing their renewable energy output. In addition, we are also considering the exciting integration of battery storage systems to perfectly complement their renewable infrastructure, enabling greater flexibility and control over energy consumption and increasing their efficiency.

In summary, FW Mansfields is taking significant strides towards sustainability with their impressive green energy portfolio and ongoing commitment to expanding renewable solutions. Their latest solar projects, strategic partnerships, and innovative technologies showcase their dedication to lowering carbon emissions and enhancing energy independence. By pursuing a multifaceted approach to renewable energy, FW Mansfield are setting a powerful example for the industry.
