In a significant move toward sustainability, Harvest Green Developments recently completed the design and installation of a 335.16kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system for JJ Foodservice

Commissioned in May 2023, this ambitious green energy project made up of almost 800 solar panels, marks a decisive step in JJ Foodservice’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency. Harvest Green Developments, known for its expertise in renewable energy solutions, played a pivotal role in helping JJ Foodservice achieve there sustainability goals.

The food wholesale industry is not only about providing quality products but also about embracing responsibility towards the environment. Understanding this, JJ Foodservice has taken innovative steps to incorporate green energy into its operations. This rooftop solar PV solution is part of a broader strategy to align business practices with sustainable development goals, which will see additional PV systems installed across more of their UK facilities in the future.

The design of the solar PV system was tailored to meet the specific energy needs of the Leicester facility, which incorporated the module-level optimisation technology provided by SolarEdge inverters to ensure optimal performance and maximum energy savings for the site. Since its commission, the 335,16kW system has generated a total of 385.63MWh of clean electricity (as of August 2024), with most of the renewable energy being consumed to power the facility. Not only does this rooftop solar PV solution provide substantial savings on the cost of importing electricity from the grid, but it also reduces JJ Foodservice’s reliance on fossil fuels and contributes significantly to mitigating the company’s carbon emissions.

Through their commitment to investing into green energy solutions across their sites, JJ Foodservice are setting a powerful example within their industry, which is certain to positively resonate with an increasing eco-conscious consumer base. By prioritising the importance of sustainability, the company is not only enhancing its brand reputation but also contributing to a cleaner, greener planet.

Technology

The latest technology incorporated in this 335,16kW solar PV system underscores the commitment to efficiency and innovation. It features an impressive rooftop array of 798 Tier 1 solar panels supplied by Trina Solar, renowned for their durability and high performance. Coupled with SolarEdge inverters, this setup allows for remote monitoring, where individual panel performance can be tracked in real-time. The use of high-quality mounting kit from K2 Systems ensures the solar panels are securely installed across skylights and optimally positioned, maximizing sunlight exposure and energy generation.
