Waste not, watt not! Haigh Engineering clean up with their investment into commercial solar PV

Read the case study

We are proud to have delivered a 323kW solar PV installation for Haigh Engineering

Haigh Engineering, a waste processing system designer and manufacturer, have taken a major step to further improve the sustainability of their manufacturing operations with a new commercial solar PV system at their factory facilities in Ross-on-Wye. This is the first of a number of such investments to be made at the site which aim to reduce the company’s usage of energy from the grid, save substantial money on energy bills, and help Haigh Engineering’s customers on their various net zero journeys.

With a heightened awareness of climate change, Haigh Engineering’s customers are now expecting transparency and improvements to reduce the lifetime carbon impact of the waste disposal systems that are being manufactured. In addition to the carbon accounting methodologies already being adopted within Haigh Engineering’s manufacturing operations, the company’s new investment into renewable energy allows them to further achieve their sustainability targets.

The commercial solar PV system that Harvest Green Developments have designed and installed to the factory’s rooftop now allows Haigh Engineering to become more energy self-efficient and reduce their dependency on the grid.

Jacob Shepherd, Haigh’s Managing Director notes “The Harvest Green Developments team have delivered a great installation for us, they were clear and straightforward to work with from initial proposal right through to commissioning the system.”

Key Facts

The significant investment into commercial solar PV produces up to 50% of Haigh Engineering’s electricity requirements over the peak summer period and it is estimated to provide at least a quarter of the current total energy generated over a full typical year.

As of July 2024, the solar array has produced over 393MWh of clean electricity and successfully offset over 76,000kg of CO2 emissions. 98% of the energy generated has been fully consumed by operations on site, therefore reducing the need to import electricity from the grid by an impressive 26% since the solar installation was commissioned.

Sector: Engineering

Haigh Engineering are a leading engineer and manufacturer in solid handling and waste processing systems, providing waste and sewage treatment solutions worldwide.

Install Type

With the module-level optimisation technology from SolarEdge, this commercial solar PV system achieves a DC size of 323kW and has additional import and export monitoring installed, which allows the client to measure how much electricity they are generating, using, and importing from the grid within the facility.
