AST Plastic Containers UK takes a sustainable leap with optimised solar PV systems

Harvest Green Developments is absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Renewable Hub, a carbon and cost reduction company, in the delivery of a pioneering project that will see Wrexham based plastic manufacturer, AST Plastic Containers UK, have two fully optimised solar PV systems installed across its sites. With a clear aim to generate as much of their own electricity as possible, AST Plastic Containers is focused on offsetting future energy consumption and reducing their overall energy costs. Starting in June 2023, Harvest Green Developments will lead the installation, utilising the latest technology and innovative renewable energy solutions to enhance AST Plastic Containers’ sustainable energy capabilities.

The upcoming photovoltaic systems will boast impressive specifications, with 785.70kW installed across one rooftop and a further 395kW added to another. Together, these optimised solar PV systems are estimated to produce a staggering total of 962,820 units of clean electricity each year, which equates to a reduction of 377,425kg of carbon emissions for the business. It would take an incredible 11,265 new trees to be planted to achieve the same results. As AST Plastic Containers embraces this exciting transition to renewable energy, they not only bolster their green credentials but also align their operations with environmentally friendly practices.

The integration of optimised solar PV is further strengthened through the use of SolarEdge inverters, which incorporate the latest module-level optimisation technology. This sophisticated system allows for remote monitoring and tracking of individual solar panel performance, making it easier to identify and rectify any faults rapidly, therefore minimising downtime and ensuring energy production remains at peak efficiency.

The strategy behind this project includes innovative mounting solutions from K2 Systems, which facilitate the safe installation of solar panels across skylights without causing damage to them to further maximise the roof space. Additionally, Rubicon UK’s trapezoidal mounting system will be deployed where solar panels are not required to cover skylights, ensuring continuous versatility and structural integrity. With a total of 2,897 Tier 1 solar panels supplied by Trina Solar, AST Plastic Containers is set to benefit from high-quality components designed for optimal and lasting performance.

Another standout feature of this collaboration is the Power Purchase Agreement, otherwise known as a PPA, under which the optimised solar PV projects are being developed. This funding option significantly minimises expenditure for AST Plastic Containers, since the entire cost of products and construction is covered by the investment from a Power Purchase Agreement provider, such as Harvest Green Developments. Under this offering, the clean electricity that is generated by the solar PV installations will be sold back to AST Plastic Containers at a much lower rate than what they currently pay grid suppliers, ultimately leading to reduced energy costs. AST Plastic Containers manufactures a variety of plastic products using heavy machinery and high-temperature ovens, processes that inherently demand substantial electricity. This significant energy requirement makes the implementation of optimised solar PV an ideal solution for the company. By investing in these systems, AST Plastic Containers can expect considerable savings on energy bills whilst also contributing positively to environmental sustainability.

As the installation progresses and is expected to be commissioned by August 2023, AST Plastic Containers UK is poised to make impressive strides in their energy management and sustainability efforts. These optimised solar PV systems not only represent a commitment to renewable energy but also showcases how innovative technology can drive operational efficiencies in traditional industries.

The journey towards a greener and more sustainable future is underway for AST Plastic Containers, proving that with optimised solar PV, the path to environmental responsibility can also be economically advantageous. Organisations like AST Plastic Containers are redefining industry standards and setting a powerful example for others to follow in the pursuit of energy independence and sustainability. Stay tuned for more updates as we celebrate the commissioning of these transformative solar initiatives!
